Skylight Installation and Replacement in Las Vegas

A skylight is a hole in your roof with a window in it. Whether it leaks comes down almost entirely to the flashing detail around the curb.

Why old skylights leak

Most skylight leaks are the flashing and the sealant, not the glass. Acrylic domes from the 1980s and 1990s also yellow, craze and go brittle under desert UV, and once the dome cracks the unit is done.

Replacement done properly

The old unit and its flashing come out, the curb is inspected and repaired if the wood has degraded, and the new unit is flashed into the roof assembly with the manufacturer kit for that roof type. Sealant is a supplement to flashing, never the waterproofing itself.

Glazing that suits this climate

Modern glass units with low-e coating let in daylight while cutting a large share of the solar heat that an old acrylic dome passed straight through. That difference is noticeable in a west facing room in July.

New skylights and sun tunnels

For interior rooms with no exterior wall, a tubular skylight brings in daylight with a much smaller roof penetration. We will tell you which one fits your framing and your roof type.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace just the glass in my skylight?

On some units yes, but on older domes the frame and flashing are usually at the same stage of wear as the glazing. Replacing the glass in a failing curb buys a short reprieve and another leak.

Should I replace skylights during a re-roof?

Yes, if they are anywhere near end of life. Flashing a new skylight into a new roof costs far less than opening a finished roof later.

Do skylights make a room hotter in summer?

An old single glazed acrylic dome can. A modern low-e glass unit, correctly sized and placed, gives you the daylight with much less of the heat gain.
